NYBG Orchid Show

The New York Botanical Garden’s Annual production of The Orchid Show has been a beautiful, timeless, and transformative presentation at the garden for 19 years. The show runs from the months of February to late April during the time where typical plant growth and germination is otherwise few and far between. The Orchid Show attracts viewers from all across the world as an international spectacle of design, nature, science, education, and conservation. Orchids are an otherwise very difficult species to cultivate and care for, so these delicate creatures are prized delicacy in the world of horticulture. Their unique and intricate colors, patterns, shapes, and forms make for not only a spectacular performance, but can conjure up responses of peace, tranquility, healing, energy and wellness.

At the Winter 2022's showing, titled ‘The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope’, we find the junction between geometric forms and natural beauty. The use of mirrors, reflection, theatrics, lighting, and dramatic hanging structures make for the perfect props to elevate the display of orchids. Leatham’s show ran in 2020 but was cut short and then canceled in 2021 due to Covid-19. The pandemic had a significant impact on the garden, but NYBG swiftly responded by doing everything in their power to keep the back yard of New York alive and open for those in need of an escape. NYBG’s mission goes further than showcasing sensational plant life- the people of this establishment bend over backwards for the beauty, science, consumption, relations and interactions that occur due to their immeasurable hard work...and we can’t thank them enough.
